I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. I attended the University of Louisville for both my undergraduate studies and medical school. I enjoy walks with my wife, tennis with my kids, working out, and cooking. I feel that being active is very important, not only in childhood but also as we age. I also enjoy cooking and feel it’s important to learn skills in the kitchen to be able to prepare meals made with real food and decrease the consumption of processed foods, which will help promote better health. Children are a vulnerable population and I feel it’s important to be their advocate and ensure their safety, promote good health, and protect them with vaccines. As a tennis pro, I had the opportunity to work a lot with children and always enjoyed their energy, honesty, and humor. Being comfortable with children and interacting with them came natural to me and so pediatrics was my calling. I am passionate about promoting optimal health through nutrition and protecting children with vaccines. I take time to talk to my patients and their families about things they can do that will make a difference. Preventive medicine means helping kids live healthier lives through diet and exercise and getting their vaccinations. I do a lot of counseling about the importance of vaccinations. These things are big concerns for me. My goal is to establish trusting relationships with families and children so they can be comfortable and honest with me in the exam room. I want them to be able to talk to me about anything and know that I’ll be right there with them. I really try to connect with my families — inside the office and out in the community. In addition to my practice, I am the co-chair of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Obesity & Nutrition and was also a contributor to the Florida Chapter of the AAP Obesity & Nutrition Toolkit. Dr. Mcrae is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Short Stature (Growth Disorders). His top areas of expertise are Common Cold, Food Allergy, Obesity in Children, and Developmental Dysphasia Familial.

I’ve been caring for children since 1993. I feel it is a privilege to be a pediatrician and to become a part of these families. I am married to a wonderfully supportive husband, Joel, and we have two grown sons. We have been together since 1981 and were high school sweethearts. I work with children because I come from a huge Chinese family. I am number six of six children. My mom’s family had seven kids and my dad’s family had five. My heart is full when I’m around children. The more the merrier! I am passionate about children with special needs, ensuring that parents are supported and their child has all the resources they need to live a full and healthy life. I am also passionate about missionary work and providing care to children both in the United States and overseas who do not have access to medical care. When we’re not at work, my husband loves to cook, and I enjoy spending time with my family and traveling. I hope to make a difference for each of my patient families through the care I provide and by conveying to them how much I care about them. In addition, I try to complete at least one medical mission trip each year, and I’m passing the torch on to my sons, Tim and Nick. They both have traveled with me — and on their own — on medical trips all over the world. We also volunteered at Mitch Albom’s SAY Detroit clinic for homeless women and children. Dr. Elton is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Short Stature (Growth Disorders). Her top areas of expertise are Delayed Growth, Croup, Obesity in Children, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I was born and raised in Florida, did my undergrad training at the University of Miami, medical school at Florida Atlantic University and residency at the University of Florida. From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a pediatrician. I enjoy building relationships with my patients and their families, and celebrating all life’s little moments with them. Working with children brings out the best in me. As a pediatrician, I have the honor to watch children grow up in my practice. I get to see them grow from precious newborns to energetic toddlers to star students to well-established teens headed to college. To share these moments with the kids and their families means so much to me. I am passionate about working closely with my patients and their parents to ensure that they are active members in the health care team. I want to empower families to ask questions and feel that they are being heard. I enjoy walking side-by-side with my patients and their families by celebrating the little moments, and providing comfort and advice during life’s challenges.   I have special interest in issues such as:  behavior  development I try to make a difference by providing a friendly, open atmosphere in my office. I grew up in a small town in Puerto Rico and moved to Florida in 2008 after completing my residency in Long Island, NY. I enjoy being a primary care pediatrician because it allows me to educate families to support their children’s development. I address a child’s well-being from all perspectives — physical, emotional and intellectual. My interest in pediatrics began during my rotation in medical school. I found that caring for children was immensely rewarding. Pediatrics involves a group of family-centered approaches to ensure a healthy development, and I enjoyed been part of that. Children always remind me what it's like to be happy, happy with the simple things in life. I am passionate about education and patient advocacy. One of the most important experiences I can provide for parents and their children is to talk and listen to them. I do my best to provide my patients the same level of care and compassion that I want for my own children. I’m a Florida native from Tallahassee. I earned my bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from Furman University and completed medical school at the University of South Florida. I enjoyed my pediatric residency in Orlando so much that I stayed on an extra year as chief resident. For me it’s truly an honor and a privilege to care for children and I love sharing in the exciting and challenging experiences of parenting. fh;sj k I knew I wanted to care for children after I spent a high school summer working with a pediatrician. I quickly understood that the doctor didn’t just treat patients – she had relationships with families, and this left a lasting impression. Throughout medical school, my residency, and especially today in my practice, working with families is the best part of my job. It’s my goal to become a trusted “medical home” for parents and kids, helping them through all of life’s stages. I’m passionate about educating families, because knowledge is power. As a partner in care, I teach families not only about illnesses, but also about growth, behavior and development, to help them raise happy, healthy kids who grow into happy, healthy adults. Knowing that every child is unique, I offer personalized guidance, support and advice for each family. I strive to really get to know my families and I invest my attention and experience to help every child in any way I can. One of my proudest moments was being inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society which recognizes medical students and practicing physicians for their compassion, excellence in clinical care, leadership, and dedication to service. Living up to this high standard drives every interaction I have with my patients and families. What is short stature (growth disorder)?

A child has short stature (growth disorder) if their height is in the bottom 3% compared to most other kids their age, gender, and ethnicity. Proportionate short stature is when the child is short, but all body parts are in their usual proportions. In disproportionate short stature, the arms and legs may be short compared to the torso, or vice versa.

Not all kids with short stature have a growth disorder. Some are just naturally smaller. However, if a child’s height falls below the third percentile line on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention clinical growth chart, their pediatrician may recommend running tests to see if there’s something more going on.

      What causes short stature?

Short stature can happen for different reasons. Sometimes, it’s familial, which means being short runs in the family. There are also several genetic disorders, including achondroplasia, Down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Turner syndrome, and Noonan syndrome, that can lead to short stature.

Other times, it’s due to an underlying medical reason, such as not getting enough food to eat or not absorbing nutrients from food correctly. Chronic illnesses that put extra stress on the body, like congenital heart disease, kidney and lung problems, or digestive issues, can also affect growth.

Another cause is a lack of growth hormone, which is a special chemical made by the body that helps kids grow. If a child’s body doesn’t make enough of this hormone, they might not grow as tall as they should. When doctors can’t find a clear reason why a child is shorter, this is called idiopathic short stature.

      Which doctors treat short stature?

A pediatrician is usually the first doctor to identify short stature and may refer families to other pediatric specialists to help address symptoms. For example, if short stature is due to nutritional deficiencies, the pediatrician may recommend the parents see a dietician for guidance.

If short stature is due to hormone problems, a pediatric endocrinologist is the doctor to see because they focus on diagnosing and treating hormone-related issues like growth hormone deficiency, early or delayed puberty, and thyroid problems. Pediatric endocrinologists are specially trained to understand how hormone issues affect children as they grow and develop.

How is short stature (growth disorder) treated?

First, doctors will use different tests and tools to figure out the root cause of the growth disorder. Sometimes, they use X-rays to look at the bones in the child’s hand and wrist, which can show how fast the bones are growing. They may also run blood tests to see if the child is making enough growth hormone or other important hormones that help the body grow. Once they figure out the cause of short stature, they can create a treatment plan to help the child grow and stay healthy.

Growth hormone therapy is the most common treatment for hormone-related growth disorder. This entails giving the child regular shots of synthetic growth hormone, usually once a day, over several years. During this time, doctors will closely watch the child’s growth to see if the treatment is working. They might measure the child’s height every few months and adjust the dose as needed. The goal is to help the child reach as close to their potential adult height as possible.

When should I see a Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor near Winter Garden, FL?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor near Winter Garden, FL?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctors near Winter Garden, FL?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctors near Winter Garden, FL?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor near Winter Garden, FL?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor near Winter Garden, FL?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more.
